Outdoor First Aid

Why would I want to do this course?
This 16 hour course equips the outdoor enthusiast, outdoor worker or instructor with the skills, knowledge and techniques required to deal with a first aid incident in a remote and potentially hostile environment where help may be a number of hours away. If you are mainly working with children the course can be adapted to have a paediatric content.

An additional short module (of around 2-3 hours) in the use of external automated defibrillators (AEDs) can be added offering a dual qualification of Outdoor First Aid and CPR& AED use.

What would I do on this course?
Around 70% of the 16 hour course will be spent in interactive, practical activity. It will be delivered by qualified teachers and trainers who also have practical first aid experience in a variety of outdoor settings. Part of the course is spent applying your new skills outside in practical scenarios.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

Assess the situation so you can act safely and effectively in an emergency
Take, record and monitor vital signs
Deal with the unconscious person
Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and deal with someone who is choking
Administer first aid to someone who is wounded, bleeding and suffering from shock
Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries
Recognize and deal with a range of injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries and chest injuries
Treat burns, scalds, eye injuries and sudden poisoning
Recognise the presence of major illness and medical emergencies including anaphylactic shock, heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma and diabetes
Deal with environmental concerns such as the effect of heat and cold, stings and bites
Protect, insulate and move casualties
Record and report incidents
Appreciate how to prevent cross infection
Use available equipment

Assessment is continuous through each section of the programme.
